The feeling at their home stadium was far from happy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?
Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, before he publicly stated that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Roman club became as messy in their performances as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or self-destructing.
Matteo's Unexpected Presence
At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to stay there for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to identify the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
