Individuals who endured abuse by church officials have expressed renewed hope after their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

The board president, heading the anti-abuse organization, stated that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so early in his papacy spoke volumes about his commitment to tackling the issue.

Worldwide Strict Policy Pushed

The organization is pushing for a global zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any priest who admits to or is proven of abusing a minor. This approach has already been adopted in the US.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in certain regions of the world" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is pushback," Hickey remarked.

Inherited Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the role in May, has taken on this persistent problem that has haunted the Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an unprecedented meeting on child abuse within the institution and changes to canon law to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Personal Link

For the representative, who uses they/them pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the measure is personal. The North American activist shared they were abused by a priest who was later transferred between various churches.

"We trust this will set the tone for his leadership, because we want to collaborate with him," they expressed. "Both sides share the common objective, we want to end abuse by religious officials."

Historic Meeting

Seven representatives of the organization, which includes survivors and supporters from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pope in his official residence.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, lasted to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was described as "quite empathetic" when listening to the story of a woman abused at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

They added the Pope was "tender" about their personal experience and seemed "modest, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Victims have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I believed like he was genuine, realistic, and receptive and keen to work with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The group is hoping that revisions to canon law will enable the implementation of the strict approach globally.

They have spoken with specialists and gathered documents that they plan to submit to the pontiff.

"He appeared engaged in reviewing it," Hickey noted.

Accountability Emphasized

A recently released Vatican-commissioned report emphasized the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or dismissal of Church leaders or staff in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The document also pointed out that victims repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for bishops and major superiors to be made responsible for negligence and cover-up."

Moving Forward

Hickey revealed they informed the Pope at the beginning of their discussion: "This represents as much a challenge for him to participate in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the encounter, Hickey expressed hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the end of the day, coming together and building a connection and continuing to strengthen that bond is a step in the correct path," they stated.

They concluded that they shared with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I feel like we can alter how the narrative concludes - he appreciated that."
