The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
